The second event in the “Culture and Communication Talks” series was held on Thursday,
April 30, 2026, at 13:30 in the Conference Hall of the School of Foreign Languages. The
speaker of the event, organized by our department, was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Habib Tekin, a
faculty member of the Department of German Language and Literature at the Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences, Marmara University. The program was moderated by
Research Assistant Ayşenur Özkan Işık and Research Assistant Dr. İpek Kesici.
In the presentation titled “Goethe and Moral Philosophy,” the intellectual legacy, works, and
multifaceted identity of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were discussed. It was emphasized that
Goethe was not only one of the leading figures of German literature, but also an important
thinker who contributed to philosophy and the natural sciences. In this context, his
interdisciplinary approach and its significance within European intellectual history were
evaluated.
The event also addressed Goethe’s decisive position in German literature and briefly touched
upon the historical background of the literary tradition in the German-speaking world.
Through Faust, themes such as the search for meaning, the desire for knowledge, willpower,
and responsibility were examined, while Die Leiden des jungen Werthers was used to explore
the relationship between the author’s life and his literary production.
The program concluded with a Q&A session during which participants’ questions were
answered.
